24″ x 33″ – The lady’s face is obscured so that the viewer can imagine the detail. The shyness of the lady is depicted through the angle of the painting.
24″ x 33″ – Hilton: Andre & Nola’s youngest son, after he cut his long surfer’s curly hair. The innocence of youth is shown in his open blue-eyed expression. He won the SA surfing championship at U/16 level.
16″ x 23″ – A Camel in Jegol, Ethiopia, straining to scrape through a gate reminds one of the images Jesus gave that it is harder for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. He referred to a very small gate in the wall of Jerusalem where a camel had to be unloaded before crawling through the opening.
12″ x 18″ – The African Lion is the King of the Jungle. His majestic mane gives him a royal appearance. When a lion roars the bush trembles. A lion can kill a cow with one blow of his gigantic paws. Tourists are warned not to get out of their vehicles to photograph the African lions. Sometimes they disobey orders and pay the ultimate penalty.
16″ x 23″ – Everybody dreams of sailing on a yacht just for pleasure one day. This picture inspires such hopes to make those dreams come true. Sail away on a yacht from a dream island in your imagination as you look at this painting.
16″ x 23″ – I saw this man at the Bangkok International Airport and sketched him very quickly. There are so many lines on his face that I decided not to paint him. The lines say it all.
12″ x 18″ – This is the aged face of the bard, Bob Dylan, with his pencil line moustache and loose curls on his forehead. Dylan still performs over a hundred and fifty concerts per year even though he is in his ‘70’s. Dylan had a profound influence on my life in many ways. He has composed over 2 000 songs and has won an Oscar and many other awards.
12″ x 18″ – The Royal Guard in London is a post card everyone likes to send home! Their stillness and strong stare give them the appearance of a statue.
12″ x 18″ – The head of a leopard has such beautiful lines! In South Africa leopards are scarce. They are almost extinct and need to be preserved although they are a threat to farmer’s cattle. I once saw three leopards preparing to attack a herd of Rooibokke in the Kruger National Park. We stopped our car and sat riveted in suspense watching as they checked the direction of the wind and strategized their kill. We actually stayed till we saw them killing one of the bucks. What an unforgettable experience!
12″ x 18″ – The African elephant is recognized by its largeness and the shape of the ears: each ear is formed in the shape of the continent of Africa. Amazing! There must be a Creator of all things to think up such great detail! It is a ferocious animal and if it is upset it is a great threat to passing motorists in the National Parks.
12″ x 18″ – Mandela at the Union Buildings raises his clenched fist in a salute as he always did. Yet there is a smile on his face. His loose hanging and colorful dress shirts became a fashion in South Africa while he was alive. As a result of his powerful influence South Africa had a peaceful transition from the Apartheid’s Regime to the new democratically chosen ANC government. We were spared the bloodshed in transitions that most African countries had to go through.
12″ x 18″ – Hugh Masekela is a well known figure in the South African music market, almost an icon.
12″ x 18″ – I travelled in many busses in Africa. This one took me from Harare to Gweru in Zimbabwe. These busses are normally jam-packed and the roof carriers can take no more luggage! Many times there is no air-con in the bus. The roads in Africa are notoriously bad and full of pot holes, but in Zimbabwe they are still passable.
12″ x 18″ – Richie Havens became famous for his on the spot improvisation at Woodstock Music Festival in ‘68 when the next performer did not pitch up. The organizers just told him to ‘play something’ and he jammed away singing, ‘Freedom!’
12″ x 18″ – NY, NY, probably the only city in the world that can be written in two letters followed by the name of the state also in two letters! But everyone knows where that is and what it stands for. This painting depicts the enigmatic, mysterious, stimulating, frightening, creative, congested and cosmopolitan New York. Like the songwriter said: ‘If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere!’
8″ x 12″ – The Arab Elite Unit wearing masks gives a taste of what life must be like in the troubled Middle East. Lives are at stake almost every day. The sight of soldiers and militant rebels are part and parcel of everyday life.
8″ x 12″ – I sketched this Cuban man while I was in Cuba. They stopped importing cars since 1950 so all the cars have a retro look – Old De Soto’s and Cadillac’s are painted in bright colors and the drivers look as if they came with the cars! The Old Worldly feel of Cuba must have attracted the likes of Ernest Hemmingway and inspired them to write. I signed my name on the wall in the famous ‘Pub in the Middle’ where Hemmingway used to sip his Mojito’s in Havana.
16″ x 23″ – African women have a way to wear their colorful headgear with such pride. The head gear normally matches their colorful dresses. No matter how hot it is, African ladies dress in their full attire when they go to town.
